Phoenix, Arizona
May 21 - 23
After our visit to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon we headed south towards Phoenix to sightsee, turn in the rental car and on May 24th fly back to Baltimore. From Flagstaff we drove down Utah 89 to Sedona where we stopped for lunch and then on to Phoenix.
A rest stop between Flagstaff and Sedona. Note the switchbacks in the upper left photograph where UT-89 is dropping over 2,500 feet between these two towns, and will drop another 3,000+ feet by the time we get to Phoenix.
Sedona is a tourist town with beautiful scenery. Note that you must check your guns at the door of the restaurant where we had lunch.
Desert Flowers and a Saguaro Cactus. The Saguaro grows below 2000 ft.
We celebrated our anniversary at Pinnacle Peak, near Scottsdale, Arizona.
Although there are inside tables the patio is most popular. Note the collection of ties in the lower left photo. If you wear a tie it will be cut off and added to the collection.
The Arizona State Capitol. The left photo shows the old building which is now the Capitol Museum and connects to the lobby of the present capitol. The right photo is the entrance to the present capitol.
Fred Harvey established a chain of eating establishments to feed travelers on the old Santa Fe railroad. The Harvey Girls were the waitresses who were noted for their good service. CLICK HERE for more details.
The anchor from the Battle Ship Arizona, sunk on December 7th, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, is displayed as a memorial.
