Bryce Canyon May 7 - 9, 2007

Bryce is in the Colorado Plateau but the geology is quite different.  The name is Bryce Canyon National Park, but it is not a canyon formed by a flowing river as in Zion and the Grand Canyon.  Wind, rain and frequent freeze / thaw cycles formed the "Hoodoos" in this park.

UTAH Hwy 12 on the way into Bryce Canyon       Looking West from Hwy 12 we see snow capped mountains

Views from the rim.

Return in a few hundred years to see the formation above become hoodoos.  The top of the plateau is covered with Pine Trees.  The area is semi arid, they had light snow two days before we arrived, contributing to the freeze / thaw cycle.

Thor's Hammer and Natural Bridge formed from the soft stones in Bryce.

Marion and Richard enjoy the many views from Rainbow Point.

The snow capped peaks are about 50 miles east.

The Raven is ever present looking for a handout.

Approximately 25 miles east of Bryce is Kodachrome Basin State Park.  The right picture is Chimney Rock.
